Takamine Craftsmanship: frets and fretwork

Most makers don't give frets enough credit - or attention. A good fret design can improve the clarity and response of an instrument. And a good fret job can help a player reach new heights.

The most accurate way to cut fret slots in the fingerboard is all at once with a multi-blade saw. The next important step is to install the frets evenly and with equal pressure. Perfect crowning is next - for perfect intonation. All this takes time and precision.

Examine the frets on a Takamine. You can see how smooth they're finished. Fret a note. Notice how the string contacts the centerline of the fret perfectly. And hear the clarity when you play. A good fret job can be the difference between a nice guitar and a great guitar.
